中国为什么能迅速扑灭重庆山火？

Firefighters in Chongqing, a city in Southwest China,

消防员们短短九天时间

have extinguished an outbreak of major willdfires

caused by extreme heatwaves in only nine days.

They accomplish this by intentionally igniting a fire

and linking it with the burning forest fire in the opposite direction.

On the critical night of August 25,

forest fire teams from neighboring Yunnan province

决定利用以下两个条件

decided to set a backfire,

making use of these two conditions:

1. 利用由数千名志愿者开拓的

A forest isolation belt that was

manually carved out by thousands of volunteers,

clearing away any possible combustible substances

So when the fire came.

2. 利用风向优势

The wind.

消防员们抓住风向改变的绝佳机会

Firefighters seized a perfect opportunity

随着北风点燃了一场新的大火

following the wind blowing from North to South

与山火相向燃烧

and igniting a new fire that flared up and ran into the wildfire.

整个过程持续料了三个小时，午夜前后

The whole process took 3 hours and around midnight,

the newly ignited backfire

拦截并扑灭了肆虐的山火

intercepted and extinguished the raging fire.

“以火攻火”虽然听起来简单

Although this may sound simple,

it required clever tactics and a great amount of joint effort.

With 50 professional firefighters at the front

数千名武警与志愿者在后方支持

and thousands of armed police and volunteers in the back,

By the next morning,
